Andre Tchelistscheff, the dean of American winemakers died in 1994. Born in Moscow in 1901 he fought with the white army during the Russian Civil War and was left for dead in Crimea.  He made his way to Czechoslovakia and finally France studying agriculture and oenology.  He joined Beaulieu Vineyards in 1938 and influenced generations of winemakers.

The Alsace Pinot gris AOC was named in 2007. It was previously called 'Tokay Pinot Gris’.  However the term 'Tokay' was successfully claimed by the traditional wines of Hungary and Slovakia.

Hubert de Castella arrived in Melbourne, from Switzerland in 1854 and began a winery in the Yarra Valley.  The winery he established, St. Huberts exists today.
