Humanitas Good Earth Sauvignon Blanc - Product Of The Day

This Sauvignon Blanc opens on the nose with that bright, effervescent nose of white peaches, pears, a little honeydew melon. On the palate, there is a little spritz - by design - to deliver the exceptional acid and flavors. In the mouth, the delightfully crisp acid marries with the white peaches, pears, honeydew, and a little ruby red grapefruit. This wine is so bright, bouncy, and vibrant it craves music -- honestly, grab some classic being music and put your groove on with abandon and let loose!

Winemaker’s Comments:

The ‘Good Earth’ tier celebrates specific vineyards showcasing a distinct style of a particular varietal unique to that vineyard site.  George Shank’s vineyard in Wooden Valley (Napa) has something in the soil that expresses such a beautiful assembly of flavors and textures it is hard describe.  It could be the Entav clone in conjunction with the site – but the resulting white peach nectar, pear juice and red grapefruit is hard to reproduce.

George Shanks Vineyard is a jewel. It is one of the best expressions of the Sauvignon Blanc grape available in Napa.  Period.

Wine Description:

The Humanitas 2013 ‘George’s Vineyard’ Sauvignon Blanc opens on the nose with that bright, effervescent nose of white peaches, pears, a little honeydew melon.   On the palate, there is a little spritz…by design…to deliver the exceptional acid and flavors.  And in the mouth, that delightfully crisp acid marries with the white peaches, pears, honeydew…and a little ruby red grapefruit to deliver an unparalleled Sauvignon Blanc experience.  Holy Moly this is a good wine…time for a second glass!

As the wine settles on the palate, an almost creamy texture complements the crisp acidity and bright fruit.  It craves fresh oysters (oh wait, that’s me!) or a simple sole sautéed in light olive oil (ok…make it butter!) or some prosciutto wrapped melon.  But a beautiful local Chevre on a tangy sourdough might just be divine.  One way to find out!  And this bright and bouncy vibrant wine just craves music – honestly, grab some classic swing music and put your groove on with abandon and let loose!

2012 PREDECESSOR WON DOUBLE GOLD IN THE 2014 TEX SOM INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITION AND THE 2014 RIVERSIDE INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITION IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.

TASTING NOTES

Mourvedre is a grape native to Southern Rhone and typically found in Rhone blends, but rarely bottled as a single varietal. Our distinctive single varietal Mourvedre is a soft red perfumed wine with subtle flavors of blackberries and violets, a hint of clove and a dusty finish. Although this wine is a lighter style red, the fruit is bright with a surprisingly substantial mid-palate of fruit, making it a very versatile wine for a wide spectrum of foods – fish, pork, poultry and even desserts with berries.

TERROIR

The grapes in this wine all come from the Wild Diamond Vineyard in southern Lake County. At an elevation of 2,200 ft., this vineyard sits high above the fog line, with 5 – 6 hours of direct sunlight daily and then cooled by Pacific breezes at night coming across the Mendocino wind gap. Its red loamy soil is the result of ancient pre-civilization floods and contains rich nutrients that contribute to the density, acidity and color of these grapes.

Our vibrant, ruby red gemstone wine is a beautifully bodied southern Rhône-style Grenache blend, aged and fermented in neutral French oak barrels for twenty-four months. Ripe, red strawberries encompass the classic elements and style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, swirling with sour cherry jamminess and spontaneous bursts of rose water and crushed blood red oranges. The fruit echoes on the finish with warm notes and light tannins, expressing the balance and grace of the vineyard.

Trinity is an enjoyable companion for medium bodied cheeses but our wine is invariably invited to stay for dinner with entrees of salmon, duck, pheasant, goose, pork, turkey and pasta.

This Pinot Noir is still very young, will cellar for years to come and needs some decanting, if only in the glass, for the full bouquet to evolve. Brilliant garnet in color, the flavor profile starts out with cherry/black cherry and cedar, and as the wine opens up with flavors of orange zest, fig, butterscotch, cardamom and black tea, with a long, silky finish. Pair this wine with turkey, ham, salmon and savory vegetarian dishes like stuffed mushrooms or ratatouille.

TERROIR

This old vines vineyard of Pinot Noir was planted nearly 50 years ago (1966) by Pat and Duncan Haynes in what is now the Coombsville AVA, east of the city of Napa. Proximity to San Pablo Bay contributes to the temperate climate of Coombsville, with cooling effects of marine air and fog occur almost daily during the growing season Located in the wide alluvial deposits created by the wearing down of the hillsides, the Coombsville soils contain abundant rock, gravel and, in some areas, are layered with volcanic ash deposits from Mount George.

Tasting Notes

Anthem's inaugural vintage of Merlot is a Cab-lover's Merlot, and is an incredibly deep, intense wine. The 2010 Merlot's aromatics are dominated by plumbs, black berries, charcoal and dark chocolate. On the palate, there are red fruits (raspberries, red cherries) as well as melted fudge, roasted meats and licorice that tail off into a smooth and amazingly long finish. Although it is hard to imagine a better Merlot, this wine will age and improve beautifully for at least another 5-7 years and pairs well with any pasta or meat dish. Grown on Mount Veeder. Drink now through 2019.

Product Of The Day

Because this wine is made and aged in stainless tanks, the fruit is crisp and clean: initially notes of Green Apple and Pear are predominant when served chilled properly, and give way to Melon notes with a hint of Citrus as the wine warms in the glass. The mouthfeel is especially creamy due to the fact that it has undergone 100% malolactic fermentation, converting harsh malic acids to softer, milky ones.

Terroir

Grapes from this wine come from two Sonoma vineyards: one from southern Sonoma County in Carneros and the other from the Russian River area. Carneros is the cooler climate, with wind and fog prevalent conditions, meaning longer growing time, higher acidity and leaner fruit, while Russian River fruit tends to be riper and fatter in style. By blending fruit from the two distinctive areas, this wine results in high acidity and clean, crisp fruit leaning toward green apple and citrus, but with a nice, plump mid-palate of pear and melon.

The Vineyards & Vintage

The 2013 Brooks Note Marin County Pinot is a blend from two vineyards. Both are on the Marin side of the Petaluma Gap. Azaya Ranch is closest to the coast, just north of Stafford Lake on Hicks Valley Rd. It sits on a south facing, well drained slope.   Cool wind from the coast ensures thick skins, great color, and beautiful texture in our clones 2a and 777. Chileno Valley Vineyard sits on a bench facing north east into Sonoma. Because it is dry farmed, the vines struggle to produce small, intensely flavored berries. Clone 828 contributes a burst of raspberry and cherry. The site, with its cold nights and warm days, provides great acidity and a subtle earthiness typical of Marin. In 2013 the long, mild summer with late rains meant the grapes at both sites could hang on the vine longer, building beautiful ripe fruit flavors and silky tannins, without higher alcohol. The warm spring, particularly during fruit set, meant that we needed to drop quite a bit of fruit during the summer, and just after veraison.

Winemaking

Azaya Ranch was hand-picked before sunrise the morning of September 20. Chileno valley vineyard was picked just after sunrise on September 23rd. A small amount (about 10%) of the fruit was left on the stems, while the remainder was sorted and de-stemmed (but not crushed) into 1 and 1.5 ton fermenters.  A small amount of juice was removed 24 hours after destemming. The wine was allowed to cold soak for 3 days, and then warmed in the sun. Fermentation began from native yeasts, and finished within 2 weeks. Wines from the 2 vineyards were kept separate and blended just before bottling. We used two new Remond and one new Gamba barrels, along with 3 once filled barrels. The remainder was neutral French oak. The wine was bottled in September 2014 and released April 6th2015.

THE VINEYARDS AND VINTAGE

Weir Vineyard is in the Yorkville Highlands, about 7 miles south of Boonville. It sits between 900 and 1000 feet, on a south facing slope with well drained, rocky soil. The lower, eastern portion of the vineyard was planted in 1992. The slightly higher, western portion was planted in 2000. During the growing season, there is a 40-50 degree temperature shift between day and night. Both the elevation and the coastal air moving down the Anderson Valley provide cooling for the vineyard. We use Rochioli and 2A clones from the lower, eastern blocks and RC clone from the western blocks. In 2013, heavy fruit set meant that we needed to drop lots of grapes prior to veraison to maintain flavor intensity in the finished wines. Our mild summer with late rains meant the grapes could hang on the vines longer, building beautiful ripe fruit flavors and silky tannins, without higher alcohol.

WINEMAKING

The vineyard was hand-picked well before sunrise the morning of September 20th. A small amount (about 10%) of the Pinot Noir fruit was left on the stems, while the remainder was sorted and de-stemmed (but not crushed) into 1 and 1.5 ton fermenters.  The wine was allowed to cold soak for 3 days, and then warmed in the sun. Fermentation began from native yeast, and finished within 2 weeks. Wines from the three different clones were kept separate and blended just before bottling. We used two new Remond barrels. All the others were neutral French oak. The wine was bottled in March of 2015.

THE WINE

This offering from Brooks Note is an elegant ruby color typical of Weir vineyard. Aromatically, it offers notes of blackberry, cherry, raspberry, leather, and black tea with a hint of jasmine.  As it opens up, there’s a touch of clove and herbs de Provence. In the mouth, it has a lovely smooth entry, structured tannins and balanced acidity with flavors of cranberries, tart cherries, blackberries and anise. The silky texture continues through the palate with nice weight. It has a long, finish of cranberries, dark cherries and bright licorice. The cherry lingers quite a while once the wine is gone.

HARVEST INFORMATION

The grapes for the 2012 Counter Punch Merlot were hand-harvested on September 28, 2012 from the Los Carneros AVA of Napa Valley at 24.0 Brix. "Classic" and "Perfect" are just two accolades being bestowed upon the 2012 Napa Valley growing season and harvest. Textbook conditions saw near-ideal spring bud break, steady flowering, even fruit set, and a lengthy stretch of warm days and cool and often foggy nights during the long summer months. Late and light rains held off until the grapes found optimal ripeness, bringing exceptional quality to the crush pad and into the cellar.

WINEMAKING INFORMATION

The fruit arrived at the winery in small 1/2 ton bins where destemming and hand-sorting occurred. Fermentation proceeded in a small bin for eight days. The free-run was transferred directly into neutral barrels for settling. After settling, the young wine was racked from the neutral barrels into new American oak barrels (from trees grown in Minnesota) where it aged for an additional year. The wine was polish filtered and bottled in April 2014.

2011 SABINA PINOT NOIR

$ 55.00

Winemaker Tasting Notes

The 2011 Sabina Vineyards Oregon Pinot Noir opens with hints of raspberry and rose petal aromas mixed with flavors of cranberry, leather and green tea in the mouth. The wine is smooth and concentrated on the palate. Spice and sweet oak round out the rich, velvety texture producing a spectacular pinot noir for Sabina Vineyards.

Winemaker Notes

The grapes were transported from Oregon to Napa where they were then fermented in 4 separate French oak open top tanks. Fermentation lasted 15 days. The 4 lots were blended and bottled after 18 months in barrel.

Vineyard Notes

Roserock is perched on a ridge top towards the southern end of the Eola-Amity Hills AVA, which is located within the Willamette Valley, home to many of Oregon’s finest Pinot Noir vineyards. In 2011, a warm and dry harvets period gave way to cooler than expected conditions in late September and early October. Fortunately, the fruit was at or near its ripening plateau. A final heat spike at harvest dehydrated many clusters, reducing yields and concentrating flavors.
