2012 Oak Cliff Cellars Firebrick Zinfandel - Wine of the Day

2012 Oak Cliff Cellars Firebrick Zinfandel

$35

Exhibiting exceptional clarity and brilliance in the glass, this wine is effusive with a seductive nose of strawberries and cinnamon followed by layers of strawberries, raspberries with peppery notes leading to a long finish.

Firebrick Hill Vineyard sits 1000 - 1200’ above sea level in northeastern Mendocino County just north of Lake Mendocino, on the Ricetti bench, an alluvial terrace. Vineyards in the Redwood Valley AVA sit about 200 feet higher in elevation than those along the Russian River, further downstream in Ukiah and Hopland . The climate of this upland valley is slightly cooler than vineyards to the south, furthered by a gap in the coastal ridge which allows cool Pacific air currents to penetrate. These conditions result in a longer growing season and a gradual ripening of fruit that makes Redwood Valley wines refined, with more acidity and deeper color. The notable red soil of the area also provides depth of color and flavor to the wines. The result is layered, nuanced wines with great structure and bright fruit, like the peppery, spicy Zinfandels for which the Redwood Valley is known.

2013 Stella Sauvignon Blanc - Wine of the Day

 2013 Stella Sauvignon Blanc

$28

This voluptuous wine proudly presents itself with a tropical aromatic nose full of passion fruit and crisp green apple. The palate follows the nose offering pineapple-guava over a round mouthfeel with a unique acidity that only stainless steel fermentation and aging can provide. This un-oaked Sauvignon Blanc went through 50% Malolactic fermentation in order to help retain its distinct acid profile.

2013 Nobelle Wines Roussanne - Wine of the Day

2013 Nobelle Wines Roussanne

$24

The Monterey County grapes were picked by hand at night in late September.

The fruit came to the winery early morning in perfect condition, and after an immediate press, the juice was settled overnight. The next morning we racked the the lees and moves the fresh juice to french neutral oak barrels. Fermentation went smoothly, and Rhone yeast was used to enhance the aromatic charecteristics of the varietal. A daily “batonnage” made a big difference to increase the creaminess and glycerol level of this wine.

Well known for its aromatic characteristics, this roussanne starts with a mild quince bouquet, followed by a pleasant and crisp mid-body. This Monterey grape is more on the light and citrusy side than full bodied and oaky.

2013 Calstar Cellars Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir - Wine of the Day

2013 Calstar Cellars Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

$30

The Sonoma Coast, a world-renowned growing region southwest of the Russian River and just six miles from the Pacific Ocean is known worldwide for its cool-climate Pinot Noir and microclimates that contribute to slow grape maturation and optimum ripeness.  Small lots of fruit were sourced from eight exceptional Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley vineyards exclusively for Calstar Cellars Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.   The sites span the depth and width of the appellation – from the cool Green Valley knoll of Halleck to the Petaluma Gap site of Sangiacomo – bringing great complexity and cellaring potential to this bottling.

Deeply scarlet ruby in color, the 2013 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir showcases the best of a spectacular vintage.  On the nose, quintessential aromas of dried cherry, raspberries and black tea are highlighted by spiced orange, cedar and red Santa Rosa plum.   The ripeness of the vintage is balanced by bright stone fruit acidity and refreshing minerality – an undertone of toasty oak and sweet spice brings the palate into focus.  Fine grained, yet coating, tannins and strawberry spice finish make this Pinot Noir an easy match for almost any food pairing.

2013 Nobelle Wines Rosé de Carmenère - Wine of the Day

2013 Nobelle Wines Rosé de Carmenère

$9.99

‘The lost Bordeaux varietal’ thrives well here in Paso. Thirteen year old vines at Colbert Vineyards yielded about 3 tons/acre. Hand picking and quick delivery brought the fruit to the winery in perfect condition.  A saignee was made a few hours after crushing; we then moved the precious juice into neutral french oak barrels where it aged for 8 months.  A rarity with a very jammy nose, red fruits characteristics and good acids, to our knowledge it is the only carmenere rose that you’ll find in Paso Robles.

2013 Essere Franco Malbec - Wine of the Day

2013 Essere Franco Malbec

2014 Troon Black Label Syrah Reserve, Applegate Valley - Wine of the Day

2014 Troon Black Label Syrah Reserve, Applegate Valley

It is stunning that a wine can be concentrated, yet light on its feet. Applegate Valley Syrah reminds of the wines of the northern Rhône in the way in blends power and elegance. Floral and spiced on the the nose with tart black pepper aromatics and butcher shop flavors. While this wine can be cellared for a decade it is enticing enough to drink tonight. Perfect with prime rib or grilled pork chops.

2011 Petrified Forest Cabernet Sauvignon - Wine of the Day

2011 Petrified Forest Cabernet Sauvignon

$48

"Aromas of black cherry, pepper, cola, and toasty oak.  Rich and silky texture with firm but yielding tannins.  The blackberry and black cherry fruit is complemented by the spice, pepper, and oak notes.  Drinking nicely now, but will age well for 10 years or more."  Leigh Meyering, winemaker (January, 2014).

2012 Humanitas 'Good Earth' Pinot Noir Rio Vista Vineyard - Wine of the Day

2012 Humanitas 'Good Earth' Pinot Noir Rio Vista Vineyard

$55

Our Humanitas 2012 ‘Rio Vista Vineyard’ Pinot Noir begins on the nose with a mouth watering sensation of strawberry/rhubarb pie and delicious spices baked into the mix. Right behind the pie are some earthy elements and touches of pepper, tobacco, smoked meats and a hint of orange peel.

In the mouth, the fruit is very bright up front and the texture is thick in the middle and finish. A little flint & stone pops in followed by cigar wrapper, leather & black pepper. This is a complex wine, yet very easy to drink. It changes a lot in the glass…over and over again. This is duck wine – or perhaps a comfort food roast beef or fresh Alaskan salmon grilled over a wood plank with light herbs. It evolves so much in the glass, maybe a bite of all three! It is at once sultry and at the same time playful so perhaps pair this with some Madeleine Peyroux and a few of your more quixotic friends!

2013 Ryan Cochrane Wines Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills "Fiddlestix Vineyard" - Wine of the Day

2013 Ryan Cochrane Wines Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills "Fiddlestix Vineyard"

$43

There’s a reason I started with this vineyard when I made my very first wine. Fiddlestix just seems to deliver something special every single year. Welcome to this year’s installment! On the nose there’s just-ripe strawberry, wild cherries jubilee, anisette, dark roses, cigar box and just a touch of leather. On the palette, the strawberries and wild cherries remain, joined by ripe currant, candied raspberry, caramelized vanilla, and crushed flowers. This is a lighter-bodied wine than the past couple vintages, but is still quite rich with a round, smooth, full-bodied mouthfeel that envelopes your palette which yields to a cascade of sparkling acid. The finish just seems to...well...never finish.

2013 Nobelle Wines Carmenère - Wine of the Day

2013 Nobelle Wines Carmenère

$39

This varietal has a light and delicate perfume. The density of the wine is very interesting, a lot of weight, followed by long and smooth spice. It will go perfectly with a rack of lamb with rosemary or similar, the simpler the better!

Colbert in San Miguel is one of the only vineyards to carry the varietal in the region. Carmenère always ripens late; mid-October to mid-November is the usual picking time. The leaves turn black in fall, which is very surprising and rare! 100% Carmenère.

2014 Essere Franco Chardonnay - Wine of the Day

2014 Cal Star Cellars Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma County - Wine of the Day

2014 CAL STAR CELLARS SAUVIGNON BLANC, SONOMA COUNTY

$20

Pale straw gold in color, the 2014 Sauvignon Blanc is the sum of three distinct parts.  At first, bold citrus and tropical notes dominate: Meyer lemon, grapefruit, lychee, honeydew melon, pineapple and kiwi.  Secondary notes balance the fruit with lemongrass, clover and a hint of sweet ginger.  Tertiary flavors of wet rock, shortbread and vanilla round the palette and draw the juicy tropical notes through the finish.  The bright acidity brings focus to the lush citrus and ripe fruit notes while finishing with bright key lime and stony minerality.
