Currency Creek was entered into the Register of Protected Names by the Australian Wine and Brandy Corp. in 2001.  This makes it an established Geographical Indication.

The Bramaterra DOC was created in 1979.

The Girò di Cagliari DOC was created in 1979.

Jan van Riebeeck, who planted in the first grapes in Cape Town was born in 1619.

Spain's Penedés DO was created in 2002.

Spain's Chacolí de Getaria-Getariako Txakolina DO was created in 1990. These wines are made in Spain's Basque country and were almost extinct prior to receiving their DO status.

Andre Tchelistscheff, the dean of American winemakers died in 1994. Born in Moscow in 1901 he fought with the white army during the Russian Civil War and was left for dead in Crimea.  He made his way to Czechoslovakia and finally France studying agriculture and oenology.  He joined Beaulieu Vineyards in 1938 and influenced generations of winemakers.

Washington's Yakima Valley AVA was designated in 1983. Winemaking began in the area in 1869.  The region is also a prime growing region for hops, the flower that flavors and preserves beer.

Feast day of St. Urban of Langres, patron saint of vineyard workers.  He was hidden from authorities by vineyard workers who he then converted to Christianity.

Mike Grgich, Croatian American winemaker was born in 1923.

The Alsace Pinot gris AOC was named in 2007. It was previously called 'Tokay Pinot Gris’.  However the term 'Tokay' was successfully claimed by the traditional wines of Hungary and Slovakia.


The first issue of the Wine Spectator was released in 1976.
