2013 Oak Cliff Cellars Wild Diamond Syrah - Wine of the Day

2013 Oak Cliff Cellars Wild Diamond Syrah

2013 Oak Cliff Cellars Wild Diamond Syrah

$45

Syrah is known as the king of Rhone: single varietal for northern Rhone red wines and one of three primary grapes for the blends from southern Rhone. As a softer alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah still is known for its thick skin and big tannins, resulting in wines that are age-worthy and stand up to heartier dishes. This Syrah is elegance in the glass, with predominant notes of blackberry and black pepper and hints of anise, earth and leather.

The grapes in this wine all come from the Wild Diamond Vineyard in southern Lake County. At an elevation of 2,200 ft., this vineyard sits high above the fog line, with 5 – 6 hours of direct sunlight daily and then cooled by Pacific breezes at night coming across the Mendocino wind gap. Its red loamy soil is the result of ancient pre-civilization floods and contains rich nutrients that contribute to the density, acidity and color of these grapes.

2013 Playground Cellars Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

This Howell Mountain Cab comes to us serendipitous by being in the right place at the right time, with the vineyard between contracts only for the 2013 season we were able to score enough for two barrels. This is a quintessential Howell Mountain Cab.  Grabbing your senses on the nose with berries, roses, leather, and white pepper, the palate is then enhanced by dark chocolate, nutmeg, plums and toasted oak.

2013 Agnitio Chardonnay Sun Chase Vineyard

2013 Agnitio Chardonnay Sun Chase Vineyard

$50

Our first vintage of Sun Chase Chardonnay is a distinctive wine with exuberant character and ageability. The nose expresses subtle aromatics ranging from white flowers, Meyer lemons and crushed rock. Best comparted to a classic Meursault from Burgundy, the mouthfeel is at once laser-like, mineral and complex. While still in its youthful stages, with time this wine will blossom to express its mature balance of unctuousness and freshness.

Our grapes were gently whole-cluster pressed for over four hours (Press cycle used in Champagne). The juice was racked off its lies after it had a chance to settle down in a tank for at least 24 hours at 50°F. It was 100% fermented in barrels with a blend of 25% new French oak and 75% neutral oak. Only 25% of the wine was allowed to go through malolactic fermentation in order to preserve the brightness of the wine and gain just enough roundness on the palate. Aged "sur lies fines" for 12 months, this wine will cellar for years.

2013 Essere Franco Cabernet Sauvignon

2013 Essere Franco Cabernet Sauvignon

$110

This wine hails from a single vineyard, the Reverence Vineyard in the Coombsville AVA of Napa Valley.  Aged 18 months in 80% new French Oak. With aromatics of black cherry and dried tobacco leaf, this wine will jump out of the glass as you taste its complexity with firm and silky tannins. A big bodied Napa Valley Cabernet with an elegant finish.

2013 Agnitio Chardonnay Durell Vineyard - Wine of the Day

2013 Agnitio Chardonnay Durell Vineyard

$60

Rich gold color in the glass, with aromas of green Anjou pear, guava, and white peach blossom, this wine offers an aromatic complexity that can only come from the unique site of Durell Vineyard. The depth of the minerality in the mouthfeel is juxtaposed with a creamy and smooth mouthfeel. Hints of French pastry and spicy oak highlight the long, luscious finish.

Our grapes were gently whole-cluster pressed for over four hours (Press cycle used in Champagne). The juice was racked off its lies after it had a chance to settle down in a tank for at least 24 hours at 50°F. It was 50% fermented in a concrete egg and 50% in barrels, with a blend of 50% new French oak and 50% neutral oak. Only 25% of the wine was allowed to go through malolactic fermentation in order to preserve the brightness of the wine and gain just enough roundness on the palate. Aged "sur lies fines" for 12 months, this wine will cellar for years.

2013 Oak Cliff Cellars Rogues Blend - Wine of the Day

2013 Oak Cliff Cellars Rogues Blend

$29

A proprietary red blend that marries three primary varietals native to the Rhone Valley of France: GrenacheSyrah and Mourvedre (GSM). This classic-style blend resembles the Southern Rhone Chateauneuf du Papes blends in which the spice of the Grenache, lavender fragrance and perfumed berries of the Mourvedre and the dense, tannic fruit of the Syrah are united in a way that creates an earthy, yet explosive combination of flavors suitable for pairing with a wide variety of savory dishes or by itself.

2013 Ascension Cellars Trinity GSM Grenache, Syrah & Mourvèdre

$56

Our vibrant, ruby red gemstone wine is a beautifully bodied southern Rhône-style Grenache blend. Roses, red strawberries and bing cherries encompass the classic elements and style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, swirling with sour jamminess and spontaneous bursts of rose water, crushed blood red oranges and white pepper on the finish.

Trinity GSM is an enjoyable companion for medium bodied cheeses but our wine is invariably invited to stay for dinner with entrees of salmon, duck, pheasant, goose, pork, turkey and pasta.

2013 Nobelle Wines Syrah

2013 Nobelle Wines Syrah

$32

Kiler Canyon is a magical location for syrah that is known for having some of the best syrah vineyards around. The meticulous approach and high tech knowledge at the vineyard makes a big difference in the end product. The hand-picked harvest took place on a foggy morning in October and was then trucked to the winery in one-two ton bins. 100% Syrah.

Syrah and pungeons make a traditional combo that never fails. We moved the juice after a two week fermentation, and our Syrah already had that inky characteristic proper to the varietal. The wine was aged 24 months in new 500-liter pungeons.

Big and spicy are the two words that come to mind. Very different from the Parker style, this wine should age beautifully for at least a decade.

2013 Ascension Cellars Soul Shaker Bordeaux Blend - Wine of the Day

2013 Ascension Cellars Soul Shaker Bordeaux Blend

Enjoy now or be rewarded if allowed to cellar for 5 years or more.

2013 Soul Shaker compliments medium to sharp cheddar cheeses, roasted pork, braised short ribs, grilled steaks, prime rib, filet mignon, lamb, hearty stews and the company of dear friends.

2013 Stella Sauvignon Blanc - Wine of the Day

 2013 Stella Sauvignon Blanc

$28

This voluptuous wine proudly presents itself with a tropical aromatic nose full of passion fruit and crisp green apple. The palate follows the nose offering pineapple-guava over a round mouthfeel with a unique acidity that only stainless steel fermentation and aging can provide. This un-oaked Sauvignon Blanc went through 50% Malolactic fermentation in order to help retain its distinct acid profile.

2013 Nobelle Wines Roussanne - Wine of the Day

2013 Nobelle Wines Roussanne

$24

The Monterey County grapes were picked by hand at night in late September.

The fruit came to the winery early morning in perfect condition, and after an immediate press, the juice was settled overnight. The next morning we racked the the lees and moves the fresh juice to french neutral oak barrels. Fermentation went smoothly, and Rhone yeast was used to enhance the aromatic charecteristics of the varietal. A daily “batonnage” made a big difference to increase the creaminess and glycerol level of this wine.

Well known for its aromatic characteristics, this roussanne starts with a mild quince bouquet, followed by a pleasant and crisp mid-body. This Monterey grape is more on the light and citrusy side than full bodied and oaky.

2013 Calstar Cellars Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir - Wine of the Day

2013 Calstar Cellars Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

$30

The Sonoma Coast, a world-renowned growing region southwest of the Russian River and just six miles from the Pacific Ocean is known worldwide for its cool-climate Pinot Noir and microclimates that contribute to slow grape maturation and optimum ripeness.  Small lots of fruit were sourced from eight exceptional Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley vineyards exclusively for Calstar Cellars Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.   The sites span the depth and width of the appellation – from the cool Green Valley knoll of Halleck to the Petaluma Gap site of Sangiacomo – bringing great complexity and cellaring potential to this bottling.

Deeply scarlet ruby in color, the 2013 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir showcases the best of a spectacular vintage.  On the nose, quintessential aromas of dried cherry, raspberries and black tea are highlighted by spiced orange, cedar and red Santa Rosa plum.   The ripeness of the vintage is balanced by bright stone fruit acidity and refreshing minerality – an undertone of toasty oak and sweet spice brings the palate into focus.  Fine grained, yet coating, tannins and strawberry spice finish make this Pinot Noir an easy match for almost any food pairing.

2013 Nobelle Wines Rosé de Carmenère - Wine of the Day

2013 Nobelle Wines Rosé de Carmenère

$9.99

‘The lost Bordeaux varietal’ thrives well here in Paso. Thirteen year old vines at Colbert Vineyards yielded about 3 tons/acre. Hand picking and quick delivery brought the fruit to the winery in perfect condition.  A saignee was made a few hours after crushing; we then moved the precious juice into neutral french oak barrels where it aged for 8 months.  A rarity with a very jammy nose, red fruits characteristics and good acids, to our knowledge it is the only carmenere rose that you’ll find in Paso Robles.
