Paso Robles Geneseo District - Wine Region of the Day

PASO ROBLES GENESEO DISTRICT

Paso Robles Geneseo District by David Toomey for Qorkz

Another of the eleven sub-appellations of the Paso Robles  AVA the Paso Robles Geneseo District was settled by German settlers who moved from Geneseo, Illinois (which was originally settled by people from Geneseo, NY).  The district is located in the center of its parent just east of the City of Paso Robles.

The temperatures in the region are similar to those of Spain and Portugal and have a moderate marine influence.  This sea air flows into the district from over the Santa Lucia Mountains and through the Templeton Gap.  The terrain of the district is a mixture of the alluvial terraces and benches from the Estrella River and Heurheuro Creek interspersed with hills (horst) that were creating through tectonic faulting and upthrusts.  This geology helped create a mixture of alluvial (silty) clay to silty clay loam soils which changed according to elevation with soils at lower elevations tend to be acidic while those higher up were more alkaline.
