Sierra Pelona Valley - Wine Region of the Day

The Sierra Pelona Valley received its designation as an AVA in 2010. Situated across a ten-mile stretch, the Sierra Pelona Valley is part of the high desert region in Northern Los Angeles County. The Valley ranges from 2,400 to 3,400 feet above sea level, and the soils are comprised mostly of alluvial clay. The region's desert climate features a large diurnal swing in temperature, sometimes up to 50 degrees. This diurnal swing extends the growing season but also makes the grapes vulnerable to damage from a late spring frost. The region is known for its Zinfandel production.

Alta Mesa - Wine Region of the Day

Alta Mesa received its designation as an AVA in 2006. Located on 55,400 acres, Alta Mesa is a sub-appellation of the Lodi AVA and is located in Sacramento. The soil in Alta Mesa consists of clay, and gravel. The climate of Alta Mesa is warm with very little rainfall annually. The dense soil and low rainfall force the vines to grow smaller and focus all of their energy in producing their fruit, giving it a robust deep flavor. The most common grape varieties are ZinfandelSyrahCabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.

Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak - Wine Region of the Day

The Pine Mountain-Cloverdale AVA is located on 4,750 acres at the top of Pine Mountain in Sonoma, California. It received its AVA designation in 2012, making it one of California's newest. Pine Mountain, which rises between 1,600 feet at its lowest point to 2,600 feet at its highest, is one of the highest grape-growing regions in California. Pine Mountain has rocky shallow well-draining volcanic soils located on the steep hillsides of the mountain. With its lowest growing plot at an elevation of 1,600 feet, the vines sit well above the fog line that permeates much of Sonoma. The region is known for its high-quality production of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Willcox - Wine Region of the Day

WILLCOX

Map of the Willcox wine region by Gretchen Miller Neuman for Qorkz.

Arizona is generally considered to be a hot and dry place.  But even in Arizona vineyards flourish.  The Willcox viticultural area is one of those areas.  It was established in September 2016 is located east of Tucson around the city of Willcox.and is 526,000 acres in size with 26 commercial vineyards operating.

The topography of the region is a shallow basin that is surrounded by the Chiricahua, Dos Cabezas, Pinalenos, Dragoon, Little Dragoon, and Winchester Mountains and is not fed by any waterways.  The water source for irrigation in the area comes from rain water that falls primarily during the monsoon season of July and August (editors note:  monsoons produce spectacularly terrifying lightning.... also, keep your gas tank full in the desert trust me).

The soils in the Willcox AVA are loams produced wind and water born particles which allow for the heavy rains from the monsoon to drain readily into the aquifer below.  While the soils were formed in the same manner they are not uniform throughout the appellation.  They are influenced by the specific geology of the surrounding volcanic mountain ranges.

The climate of the region is effected by the topography.  Flat vineyards receive almost uniform sunshine which makes canopy management essential.  While many vineyards must remove leaves to assure that the fruit receives sufficient sunlight, Willcox vineyards must balance that with the need to protect the grapes from sunburn.  Temperatures in the basin are warmer that locations at higher elevations. Cool air does drain down the mountain which allows the grapes to develop fuller flavors during the growing season but can cause frost damage during the cold season.

Grapes produced in the region include Cabernet FrancCabernet SauvignonChardonnay, MerlotMourvedreRiesling, Sangiovese and Sauvignon Blanc.

Sonoma Mountain - Wine Region of the Day

SONOMA MOUNTAIN

The Sonoma Mountain AVA is located in Sonoma County, California. It is centered on the Sonoma Mountains. The appellation is included in the Sonoma Valley AVA, but due to its unique elevation, it was granted status as its own AVA in 1985. The area is known for its high elevation benches and its diverse micro-climates. The region's soil is volcanic and well draining. Due to the high elevations, the region sits above the fog and receives plenty of sunlight. The combination of the terror and the climate make this region perfect for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, and it is the region's signature wine.

Coombsville - Wine Region of the Day

COOMBSVILLE

Coombsville photo by David Toomey for Qorkz

Coombsville received its designation as an AVA in 2011. Situated on 11,000 acres, Coombsville is a sub-appellation of the Napa Valley AVA. Coombsville ranges in elevation from near sea level at the Napa River on the west to 1,900 feet at the ridge of the Vaca Mountain Range. The Coombsville soils consist of rock, gravel and, some areas are layered with volcanic ash generated from the slow erosion of nearby Mount George. Proximity to San Pablo Bay contributes cooling effects of marine air and fog occurring almost daily during the growing season, maintaining a constant cool temperature to offset the warm daily sun. This allows for a longer growing season than other Napa Valley growing regions and allows the fruit the time on the vine required to develop a strong balance of tannin and acidity. Like most of Napa Valley, the region is dominated by the production of Cabernet Sauvignon, but also produces ChardonnaySyrah, and Pinot Noir.

Big Valley District - Lake County - Wine Region of the Day

BIG VALLEY DISTRICT - LAKE COUNTY

Photo of the Big Valley District Lake County by David Toomey for Qorkz.

Big Valley District - Lake County received its designation as an AVA in 2013. Situated on 11,000 acres, Big Valley Lake County is a sub-appellation of the Lake County AVA. Located to the west of Clear Lake, the terrain of Big Valley is mostly flat and contains alluvial clay soils from the lake and volcanic soils eroded from Mt. Konocti. Due to its proximity to the water table, the soil in Big Valley is poor draining and the vines run the risk of flooding and becoming supersaturated with water. Clear Lake serves as a major influencer in the region, moderating temperatures creating the cooler climate. During the height of the growing season, cool breezes from the lake help to cool the vineyards during the warm afternoon, slowing the ripening process and ensuring grapes achieve good acidity balance. The soil and temperature of Big Valley Lake County make the region perfect for Sauvignon Blanc production.
